EMERGENCY CARE

MAYDAY, MAYDAY!

We have an emergency! However, there are very few true orthodontic emergencies.  Most orthodontic concerns can wait until the office re-opens. Please review the suggestions to some common issues below.  If you are experiencing an orthodontic emergency, text or call our office at 276-322-2212.

If your expander, appliance, or the metal bands around your back teeth are loose or come out, put in a plastic bag and call our office to make an appointment to reinsert.

  • Call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to get new retainers made.

  • If you have an old set of retainers you can wear them for the time being to prevent teeth from shifting.

After getting your braces on, some sore spots may develop on your lips or cheeks. This is completely normal and very common when getting braces on and after getting adjustments. Here are some tips:

  • Place wax on the offending bracket wire or appliance.  Only apply wax to areas for temporary relief so that you allow cheeks and lips to become used to your braces.

  • Eat softer foods, such as mashed potatoes and apple sauce, while your teeth are sore.

  • You may take over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Advil just as you would for a headache.

  • The length of soreness after an adjustment varies patient to patient but should be expected for the first 5-7 days.

  • If you have a poking wire, place wax over the area that is poking. You can also use a pencil eraser to push the wire down so that it will no longer poke you.

  • If the wire is thin, you can try to clip the wire with a pair of clippers, but it is best to leave the wire in place if possible.

  • If none of the above work to ease your discomfort, call our office to schedule an appointment.

  • If you have a bracket that is loose, keep it on the wire.

  • Do not try to remove as this could break other brackets off in the process.

  • Apply wax over the loose bracket if it is rubbing your cheek.

  • Call our office to schedule an appointment.

  • It is important to get this fixed in a timely manner so it will not increase your treatment time.
